Forest Town Secure Village

In Forest Town we have a strong sense of community which has allowed us to create a safer suburb at a cost affordable to most of us.

Using collective bargaining, a committee made up of Forest Town residents - acting on behalf of the majority of households in the suburb - appointed a single security and armed response company with the objective of making Forest Town safer.

Since inception of the scheme, crime in the suburb has drastically reduced to the point that Forest Town has become one of the safest suburbs in Johannesburg.

An on-site control room is currently well-established for the Forest Town Secure Village. This control room is localised for the exclusive use of the Initiative/Village.

This control room is currently manned 24 hours with trained controllers to perform the following functions:

  • Process and receive alarm signals
  • Process and record incidents from residents
  • Control and manage radio traffic
  • View and manage CCTV footage onsite

Facts at a glance:

  • Radio link-up of participating residents to armed response company with control room in Forest Town.
  • Two dedicated patrol cars, each manned by two armed response officers, patrolling Forest Town night and day, seven days a week.
  • Community initiative relying solely on the support of the residents.
